The leveson inquiry was a investigation that aimed at finding out more information into the phone hacking scandal. Thanks to the Leveson inquiry it has led to new laws in terms of how newspapers and journalists tackle news stories. The leveson inquiry looked deeply into the ethics and culture of the journalism world and the methods they were prepared to use to find information on news stories.

The difference between the 2 is that public interest is the interest of the people themselves and expressing their concerns. Interest to the public however is the government or the polices interest in the public and what decisions they believe should be made in order to keep the public safe and in order.

The British press was regulated by the press complaints commision which lays out a set of guidelines and laws that the press must follow when investigating and creating news stories. If any of these laws are broken then the pcc will lay down sanctions to the press. The pcc has since been replaced by IPSO the independent press standards organisation which has introduced self regulation. They also have the ability to press sanctions onto the press and introduce new laws that the press must abide by.
